When I was in fourth grade, my teacher read this book to our entire class for read aloud time. I absolutely fell in love with it then, and I am still in love with this novel. This fables, folk tales, and myths novel by C.S. Lewis, is a beautifully and powerfully woven story of four siblings during WWII, that find a wardrobe in a house that they had to move to. What they find behind the wardrobe is some

thing you’ll have to find out by reading the novel. Lewis does a phenomenal job creating such a story that after you are done reading it, you want to read more.

This novel can be read by younger and older students. Younger students will enjoy the fantasy and fable aspect of the story as they discover new things. Older students may find some of the fantasy aspects out of their style, but the symbolism and allegories in the novel are something they can dig deep and discover on their own if they are willing. A review by Mark Nichol touches on the fact that younger children may enjoy this novel more than older children which may be true in some cases. But if we are looking more under the surface of the story line, there is so much to uncover about what the author is really trying to say. C.S. Lewis has become ‘arguably one of the most influential writers of his day’ and his stories continue to influence my life in powerful ways.
