The Magic Tree House books by Mary Pope Osborne are great historical fic
tion reads to elementary students. Specifically her book ‘Mummies in the Morning’ she shows multiple historical aspects of ancient Egypt, touching a lot on mummies. My younger siblings have loved reading these books going through elementary school. I decided to pick one up to see what all the fuss was about and sure enough they were just as great as they said they were. She also makes it relatable to younger students as the two main characters are elementary aged kids who go on educational adventures. These books are a fun read if you are looking to get your students to dive into an educational read.
Osborne grew up in the military and always craved adventure after that era in her life had passed. A review by Megan McDonald on commonsensemedia.org states “Mary Pope Osborne has the magic formula for creating suspense and intrigue without being too scary.” I think this is a perfect was of putting it. Osborne has the right balance of these aspects and it makes for a great read for elementary ages. So if you are looking for fantasy, magic and suspense, this is the perfect series of books for you!
