Sick, a poem by Shel Silverstein, is a cleverly written poem that is very relatable to young students. Its humor in the outrageous claims of sickness help us as adults and parents to understand that it’s not just this child or that child that does this, it’s usually most children. Silverstein, who died May 1999, was not only a poet. He was also a singer songwriter, a cartoonist, screenwriter, and author of children’s books. He was a believer of his work ‘do the talking for him’, bringing imaginations of children to life in his stories and poems.

Now I couldn’t find a specific review for this poem but I found multiple reviews on his other books that contains his most loved poems. A review by Lisa Smith on goodreads.com states “It’s a great way to introduce children to art, poetry and the limitless of one’s imagination.” In one point in time, it is very important to introduce all these things to children because it is beneficial to have these topics to broaden their learning abilities. Therefore, it is crucial to include poems and different kinds of art in a classroom because it will enable some students to think more critically.
