Book Hook

ft. Coraline

 

During my sophomore year in my Children's Literature course, in groups, we were required to create a book hook for a novel we had read. My group members and I created a board game inspired by the novel Coraline. The purpose of this game is to implement themes from the novel into the game but not give anything away! Below are the rules of the game and if you have time, try to recreate your own version...will you collect all the eyes or will the other mother catch you?

 

Materials

• Playing board

• 4 playing pieces

• 1 dice for the numbers and 1 dice for the direction (left and right)

• 4 cards with the other mother on one side

• 12 cards with eyes for the lost souls on one side.

 

Purpose

            To collect the three lost souls (marbles) and make it back to the beginning without getting caught by the other mother.

 

Rules and Instructions

• This games allows for 2-4 players. Ages 8 and up.

• Set up the board.

  Take the cards and shuffle them. From the stack take 10 cards and place them randomly in the center of the board face down.

  Have the playing pieces at the start of the maze.

• All players roll the dice that has the numbers on it. The player who rolls the highest number goes first.

• Each player pick a starting point on the board with your pocket to store you marble souls.

• First player rolls the dice with the numbers on it. Follow what is given by the dice.

• If a player lands on a red colored space on the board, the player rolls the dice with the left and right signs on it. Follow what is given by the dice.

• The next person/people take their turns rolling the dice and moving their piece until they get to the middle of the maze (the other world) where the cards are placed.

• Once a player gets to the other world, the player takes a redemption card and follows what is on the other side of the card.

  If the card has an eye on it, keep your playing piece where it is.

  If the card has the other mother on it, you have been sent back to the beginning to start over.

• Continue playing the game by rolling the dice and moving throughout the maze.

  In order to re-enter the other world and take another redemption card, you must enter through a place that you haven’t done before in that particular game.

• The winner must collect 3 lost soul cards and return through the maze to the outside of the board.
